Northwest Fire Weather Summary
Light general winds will prevail across the Pacific Northwest today with some notable exceptions. Like yesterday, gusty offshore flow this morning in southwestern Oregon associated with a thermal trough will gradually diminish through the day, as will gusty northerly winds through the Okanogan Valley. Northerly winds through the Willamette Valley could also increase fire behavior this afternoon and evening. The models have not yet ruled out a slight chance for thunderstorm activityWednesday afternoon across southern and eastern Oregon, but confidence in this forecast remains low. An upper level trough will approach the region this weekend, bringing a chance of rain to western Washington and northwest Oregon and cooler marine air to other areas. Check local NWS fire weather planning forecasts for weather details.
Northwest Fire Potential Summary
The risk for development of new significant fires remains near normal levels for the beginning of September. Fuels are available as evident by elevated fire danger indices, but absent impactful weather events, the potential for new significant fires remains seasonable. Continued active burning is possible where winds and terrain align.
