FIRE UPDATE SEPTEMBER 11, 2018 Klondike Fire Southern Area Red Team Mike Dueitt, Incident Commander
Overview Klondike Fire West Zone On the north edge of the fire an influx of late afternoon dry air yesterday allowed the fire to spread northeast along Forest Road 2308 and north across Slim Creek. Firefighters used tactical firing to broaden the control line in this area. Weather permitting, this operation will continue this afternoon. Today firefighters will use tactical firing to continue securing lines from Horse Sign Butte west to Game Lake Peak and south to Saddle Mountain. Moderate fire spread is expected along the Forest Road 2308 and upslope in the West Indigo Creek area. The Little Silver Creek area will see moderate fire spread at the 3,000 feet elevation, and more active fire spread at the 4,000 feet elevation due to drier air.
Klondike Fire East Zone and Taylor Creek Fire Repair of containment lines constructed during the suppression phase continues today on the Taylor Creek Fire. The public is asked to avoid entering areas where heavy equipment and chainsaws are in use. Crews are also working to remove hazard trees along roadways on both Taylor Creek and Klondike East to allow a safer reentry when the public is allowed access to the area. Some trees are very tall and can send debris cascading down slope when they fall. Though residents have been able to return to their homes, forest closures remain in place. Residents of the Illinois River Valley may see smoke as unburned islands of fuel well within the perimeter continue to burn. Crews will continue to patrol and monitor containment lines and mop-up any hot spots of concern. Road Closures Beginning at Noon today - September 11- the Bear Camp Road will be closed to all non-fire traffic from the intersection with the Merlin-Galice Road (Josephine County Road #2400 and #2401) west to the intersection with Forest Service Road 33 near Agness. The road will open when it is determined to be safe for travel.
Road 3313 in the Rogue River Siskiyou National Forest is also closed from the junction at Road 33 to the junction at Road 3680.
Evacuation Level The evacuation level in the Agness Zone is 2 – Be Set Firing operations are not expected to change the evacuation level for Agness.
