Fire Management: Tuesday evening, management of the Cougar Creek, Lost, and Bannock Lakes Fires will pass from Alan Lawson’s Type 2 Incident Management Team to a Type 3 team lead by Randy Whitehall, Fuels Specialist on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest.
Incident Commander Lawson would like to thank the local communities impacted by the fires for their amazing support. In addition, the cooperation and support of the local fire districts, Washington Department of Natural Resources, the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, and all firefighters who put boots on the ground was recognized and appreciated.
“We’re very confident that the management of these fires is in very capable hands”, said Lawson. “Randy Whitehall and his team are experienced specialists who know this area well. Their task will be to wrap up the hard work that has been done by the previous teams.”
Cougar Creek Fire: Hard work by firefighters and equipment eliminated most of the risk on the southern, eastern, and western sides of the fire. However, the northern end, and some area within the interior of the fire, are still showing some heat. As the cool and moist weather continues, the chance of any further spread is decreasing. Crews are continuing to mop up and patrol the edges of the fire.
Lost Fire and Bannock Lakes Fires: These fires show minimal activity and are being monitored by air.
Weather and Fire Behavior: A cold front moved through the area during the morning hours Monday bringing a few light showers. Strong gusty winds developed behind the front but little growth in the fire perimeter occurred. Cool and damp weather will continue through the week.
Restrictions and Closures: Fire use restrictions are still in place. No campfires are permitted. To ensure public and firefighter safety, some road and trail closures remain in effect. Forest visitors are encouraged to call or visit the local Ranger Station or visit the Forest’s Interactive Forest Closure Map found at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/
