Cougar Creek Fire:
An aerial drone, also known in firefighting parlance as an unmanned aircraft system (UAS), was employed on Thursday to monitor fire behavior. The flight assessed activity along the fire’s uncontained edge in the northwestern corner near Signal Peak. Drones have proven to be a valuable asset to firefighters, including being able to act as a platform for infrared cameras that can identify and map hot-spots across the fire area. Repair of suppression lines continued on Thursday, on the northeast side of the fire work was concentrated around Potato Creek and on the Shady Pass Road. On the southwest side of the fire repair was completed on the north end of Forest Road 5200. Personnel in that area will be focusing on Forest Road 6105 on Friday. “There was real progress on Thursday making our paper plan match what needs to happen on the ground” according to Patti Jones, Operations Section Chief on the fire
Lost Fire: A group of rappellers flew into the Lost Fire on Thursday to assess the amount of suppression repair needed on this remote location.
Weather and Fire Behavior: An upper level trough will move over the region bringing increasingly wet weather through the weekend. Chances of rain will increase on Saturday and Sunday has a chance for a wetting rain. Temperatures will remain below normal and winds will be light and from the southwest. These conditions are not conducive to major fire expansion.
The public entering the fire area poses safety and operation problems for the firefighters, please respect the closure area so they can compete their assignment.
Restrictions and Closures: Fire use restrictions are still in place. No campfires are permitted. To ensure public and firefighter safety, some road and trail closures remain in effect. Forest visitors are encouraged to call or visit the local Ranger Station or visit the Forest’s Interactive Forest Closure Map found at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/okawen/alerts-notices.
