FIRE UPDATE SEPTEMBER 7, 2018

Klondike Fire
Southern Area Red Team
Mike Dueitt, Incident Commander

Overview
Hot, dry weather continued over the fire Thursday but, favorable winds allowed tactical firing operations to occur on the west and north parts of the fire. On the west side, firing operations were successful between Game Lake Peak and Saddle Mountain, tying the fire line in with areas burned by the Chetco Bar and Collier Butte Fires and removing fuel from the path of the advancing fire. In the north, fire moved toward Sugarloaf Mountain. Again, successful firing operations west of Fish Hook Peak backed down the ridge to prevent growth to the northwest.

On Friday, the weather will be sunny and warm with light winds. Areas of dense smoke across the fire area may prevent aircraft from flying. Firing operations will continue on the western side between Game Lake Peak and Saddle Mountain and the Indigo Prairie area west of Fish Hook Peak. Crews will also hold and mop up lines that were fired on Thursday. Depending on conditions, firing operations may be conducted on the 2308 road near Sugarloaf Mountain. Crews not involved with the firing operations will continue to improve lines and support firing operations if needed.

The evacuation level in the Agness Zone is 2 – Be Set

Firing operations are not expected to change the evacuation level for Agness.

Klondike Fire East Zone and Taylor Creek Fire
There are approximately 90 personnel working on the Taylor Creek Fire and Klondike Fire East patrolling the fire perimeter and performing suppression repair. Repair activities include grading heavily used roads, repairing damaged culverts, replacing vegetation and installing waterbars on dozer lines and hand lines to prevent erosion, and recovering timber damaged during suppression efforts. Though residents have been able to return to their homes, forest closures remain in place and will for some time. Links to more information on closures can be found below.
