The Springdale – Hunters Road reopened to the public as of 8 am this morning. The Hunters Campground in the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area has also reopened. Recreationists will see an occasional water tender near the lake drawing water for fire suppression use. The fire has remained within the established containment lines from four days ago.

Today’s weather will be favorable for firefighters as winds will be light from the north, slightly warmer temperatures and lower relative humidity. The possible change to wetting rains Saturday should assist cooling hot spots. Weather is expected to warm and dry after the possible rain this weekend.
The southern portion of the fire below Springdale – Hunters Road remains in patrol status with crews mopping up by checking hot spots by hand, digging out smoldering vegetation and spraying with water where necessary. Smoke could be visible again today from burnout operations along the east and west sides of the fire. Hand held infra-red heat detection devices are being used along the fire edges to locate heat sources for mop-up. National Guard troops will be inserted into areas of the fire assisting to cool hot spots and mop up near structures on both the east and west sides of the fire. Containment lines north of Springdale – Hunters Road are nearly complete. Direct primary lines are being constructed to prevent further fire spread.
A spike camp near Valley is being established for approximately 150 personnel. There is currently no fire movement in this direction; the camp will improve firefighter safety by reducing travel time to the fire line.
Aerial resources are available to assist the fire suppression with water drops and visual observations.
