9/04/2015 Wolverine Fire Update

Community Meeting: There are no public meetings planned for this evening.
Note: The Pacific Crest Trail is now open on the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. Forest closures are still in place but have been modified. Please check the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest webpage for details. Although we are experiencing cooler than normal temperatures and slight chances of rain in the forecast, the risk still exists for hot and dry second summer conditions. Stay vigilant with fire restrictions and prevent human-caused wildfires.
First Creek: The focus of the First Creek Fire has now changed to rehabilitation. As the weather warms up and clouds clear, expect interior smokes to continue. Because of the burn severity in many areas of the First Creek Fire, it is extremely important that residents who may be returning to the area be exceptionally aware of the possibility of mudslides following any rain events. Visit http://www.redcross.org/prepare/disaster/landslide or contact your local Emergency Management for more information on mudslides.
Wolverine: Fire activity remains very quiet on the Wolverine Fire. Continued mop-up in the area of the 2014 Duncan Fire has proved difficult as it is very spotty. Stopping the fire in this area is considered one of the biggest “wins” in keeping this fire out of the Pope Creek Summer Homes. Smokes will continue to be visible throughout the fire area as hot spots linger. Be aware, firefighters may be observed departing certain areas. Should fire activity increase, firefighters and other resources will respond. Although current fire activity remains fairly low, long hours and hard work continue with mop-up, fireline construction and work on the Community Protection Line. All areas, including Blankenship, Pyramid, Castle Creek, Fourth of July, Fifth of July and Big Hill continue to be closely monitored. Hotshot crews are working on indirect line (building fireline a considerable distance away from the fire’s edge) west of the Entiat drainage along the southwest flank of the fire. Snagging (cutting of fire weakened trees posing danger to firefighters and public) is continuing in and around the Entiat River Drainage. The Community Protection Line (a shaded fuel break or a contingency line) continues to be a big focus. Lots of progress has been made on this line. The work occurring from the Tyee Creek area south toward Sugarloaf Mountain is nearly complete. Crews in this area will continue working to tie in with crews and equipment that are working east from the Big Meadow Creek area. Unconventional firefighting equipment such as feller bunchers, skidders, excavators, masticators and chippers have become a vital part of this effort. This Community Protection Line is a vegetated fuel break that is being thinned and brushed, leaving mature trees in place with proper spacing between them. This line will assist in the firefighting efforts as well as meeting long term objectives as a possible option in future fire containment.
Weather: Continued low temperatures are expected today with highs predicted to be 66-76 degrees. Humidity levels are expected to be lower than yesterday with a slight chance of rain in the fire areas. Higher elevations of the fire around the Fourth of July Basin received a dusting of snow overnight. Saturday’s weather is expected to approach critical fire levels due to increased winds and drier temperatures.
Evacuation/Aid Information: LEVEL 1 areas: Entiat River Road starting at approximately mile post 21.5 (Brief) up to the end of Entiat River Road. First Creek Road and South Shore from Morning Sun Drive to Shady Pass.
