Carpenter Road Fire – Fruitland, Washington
Location: 35 miles NW of Spokane, WA;
Information Center: 509-722-6010 or 509-722-6040
Incident Commander: Doug Johnson
Current Situation:
The Carpenter Road Fire is estimated at 64,903 acres and 60% containment.
Significant amounts of precipitation fell over the fire yesterday. The incident command post at Fruitland Bible Camp received over 1 inch of rain. The remote automated weather station (RAWS) at the south end of the fire measured 1.5 inches of rain and the RAWS at the north end, approximately 0.6 inches.
Anticipating cooler temperatures for today and warmer and drier days to follow, fire managers are planning all actions based on safety for personnel to meet objectives. Areas once covered with a bed of dust could now become mud, making driving potentially dangerous. Where it is deemed safe to proceed by vehicle and on foot, crews will engage in repair activities, pulling in dozer berms, creating water bars and scattering slash piles on the southern portion of the fire.
On the north end, where less rain was received, the plan is to continue constructing direct lines against the fire’s edge. Fuels will slowly dry out and smoke is anticipated to appear later this evening and in the coming days. A spike camp of approximately 150 people has been established in Valley at District #4 Fire Station.
The Springdale-Hunters Road is open. Motorists should drive cautiously due to slick roads, reduced visibility and fire apparatus. The Hunters Campground in the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area is open. Recreationists will see occasional water tenders near the lake and drafting water at the boat ramp for fire suppression support.
