Current Situation:
The Carpenter Road Fire is estimated at 64,903 acres and 50% containment.
The Springdale – Hunters Road will reopen to the public tomorrow at 8 a.m. Drivers are asked to be extremely cautious while traveling the road because firefighters are continuing to work in the area. Smoke will still be visible on the hillsides and in the meadows and drivers are asked to pass through without stopping. The Hunters Campground in the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area will reopen tomorrow. Visitors are asked to be extra diligent driving in the campground area for water tenders are still drafting water from the lake for fire suppression efforts.
Tomorrow the weather will be similar to today but the light winds will shift direction and wrap in moisture from Montana. A wetting rain is forecast forSaturday morning which again will help to extinguish hot spots.
The southern portion of the fire below Springdale – Hunters Road is in patrol status with crews mopping up by checking hot spots by hand, digging out smoldering vegetation and spraying with water where necessary. Smoke was also visible today from a burnout operation that was done inside the fire boundary to more quickly eliminate fuels. Hand held infra-red heat detection devices are being used along the fire edges to locate heat sources for mop-up. National Guard troops have arrived to assist with cooling hot spots and mopping up near structures on both the east and west sides of the fire. Containment lines north of Springdale – Hunters Road are nearly complete. Direct primary lines are being constructed to prevent further fire spread.
A spike camp location is being scouted near the Valley and Waitts Lake area to reduced driving time and increase efficiency of fire crews.
Aircraft were again able to assist in suppression operations today and will continue backing up firefighters on the ground.
