9/3/2015 Cougar Creek Update

GLENWOOD, WA –

Today crews will continue building containment line along the north and west portions of the fire. Whenever possible crews will use natural barriers and improve existing roads and dozer lines to minimize disturbing soil and vegetation. Sections of completed containment line are being connected and mop up is occurring on many portions of the fire. The south end of the fire is being patrolled to monitor the integrity of the completed fireline. Dozers and felling teams continue to identify and mitigate fire line hazards, allowing ground personnel to access more areas of the fire.

The main cold trough will continue across the region today to Southern Oregon Friday before moving northwest on Saturday. A cold unstable air mass will bring the threat of showers and thunderstorms mainly this afternoon and evening and into Friday. Storm systems will allow the threat of showers to continue into early Saturday. A warming trend with dry conditions is expected Saturday afternoon through Tuesday.

Although cloudy skies and cooler temperatures have helped moderate fire activity, fuels remain extremely dry. Dead and down surface fuels will burn actively and heavy fuels will retain plenty of heat.

Southern California Interagency Incident Management Team 3 (SCIIMT3) Incident Commander Mike Wakoski and his team took command of the Cougar Creek Fire as of 8/31/2015 at 0600.
