9/07/2015 Cougar Creek Fire Update

Today firefighters will continue mopping up and improving the strength of existing containment lines. Crews are also focused on completing a small portion of containment line on the north end of the fire in an area of heavy fuels and large timber.

Today will be another opportunistic fire weather day for mopping up and improving strength of existing firelines, however a warming and drying trend begins today as high pressure gradually builds over the region. An upper trough is expected to bring cooler and more humid conditions late in the weekend.

Burned Area Emergency Rehabilitation (BAER) teams have arrived to assess the needs of these fires.
BAER teams consist of scientists and specialists such as hydrologists, geologists, soil scientists, road engineers, botanists, wildlife and fisheries biologists, archeologists, geographic information specialists, and silviculturists from federal, tribal and state agencies. BAER reports are shared with interagency cooperators who work with downstream private home and land owners to prepare for potential post-fire flooding and sediment flow impacts.
The third and longest stage of recovery of the burned areas is called long-term recovery and restoration. It is begun by identifying environmental analysis leaders and teams, and gathering initial information and data provided by the fire suppression repair and BAER assessment teams during their burned area recovery effort.

A Type III Management team from the Great Basin region is being in-briefed today and will shadow Southern California Interagency Incident Management Team tomorrow.

Official transition to the new team will occur on Wednesday.
