Lone Mountain 1 Fire Daily Update
Wednesday, August 6, 2014
Beneath the majesty of Purple Mountain, the Lone Mountain 1 Fire skunked around in Boulder Creek and Rennie Creek yesterday, but made no moves that were not expected. Smoke continues to rise from the Boulder Creek and Rennie Creek drainages inside the fire, where heat remains in avalanche paths and patches of timber. Firefighters have been patrolling War Creek Pass to ensure nothing is spotting over the ridge into the War Creek drainage. Thus far, all fire activity has remained in the North Cascades National Park. The Lone Mountain Fire has burned 2389 acres.
Incident Commander John Thompson is preparing to transfer command to Corky Conover. Today will be Thompson's last day at the helm. Also new to the management team is local North Cascades smokejumper Michael Noe. He is in training to become an incident commander. All told, about 70 people are assigned to Lone Mountain 1 Fire, as are four helicopters.
Weather experts are predicting fairly calm and slightly cooler weather for the fire area today, with winds light at 8-11 mph, again making active fire behavior unlikely.
Although the Boulder Creek Trail in the Stephen Mather Wilderness is closed due to the Lone Mountain 1 Fire, the fire remains three miles northeast from the Stehekin area, and all services are operational in Stehekin. Campfires are banned in all Stehekin Valley campgrounds from Purple Point to Tumwater. On the Methow Valley District of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, a large area closure is in place, including War Creek and Williams Creek.
