Joseph, OR – The 308 personnel assigned to the Somers Fire continue to work the steep and rugged terrain to create additional containment. The 35,917-acre fire currently remains 58 percent contained.
Due to heavy firefighter traffic along the Hat Point Road, the road remains closed. The route will be reopened as soon as safely possible, with the goal of opening in advance of bow season.
Today's anticipated cooler weather will assist containment efforts. Suppression efforts will include focusing on the six hotspots that were located in the Thompson Creek area. Fire crews will also focus on securing and improving handlines around the Deep Creek area where flames were visible yesterday. Rehabilitation of fireline will continue on the western portion of the fire and structure protection wrap will be removed. The eastern portion of the fire will be patrolled by air.
Somers Fire resources currently assigned include: five Type 1 crews, two Type 2 crews, six engines, eight water tenders, one jet boat, three Type 1 helicopters, three Type 2 helicopters, four Type 3 helicopters and one air attack platform.
To reduce travel time and increase time suppressing the fire, most firefighters are spiked out closer to the Somers Fire.
