Joseph, OR – Today Great Basin Incident Management Team 4 assumed command of the Somers and 5 Mile fires, located south and east of Imnaha.
The Somers Fire is 27,000 acres and is 35 percent contained. The 5 Mile Fire is 4,524 acres and is 95 percent contained.
Fire behavior moderated due to yesterday's rain, which measured between 1/10 to1/2 of an inch over the fire areas. Incident Commander John Kidd said, "We will take advantage of the window of opportunity of decreased temperatures and increased humidity to continue progress on these fires."
Resources include two Type 1 crews, five Type 2 crews, eight engines, two water tenders, one jet boat, two Type 1 helicopters, three Type 2 helicopters, four Type 3 helicopters and two air attack platforms.
On the Sommers Fire, today's efforts will include suppression of hotspots and line rehabilitation on the eastern portion of the fire, continuing to remove fuels and prepare structures on the northern portion of the fire, scouting the northwest portion of the fire for safe places to engage in suppression activities, preparing the western portion of the fire for a potential burnout operation (if needed), and scouting the southern portion of the fire for safe places to engage in suppression activities.
On the 5 Mile Fire, today's efforts will include mopping-up, patrolling and completing line rehabilitation. As a reminder, the Hat Point Road remains closed.
Due to rain on access roads and additional fire traffic, all visitors to the areas should use caution.
