Joseph, OR – Firefighters on the Somers Fire took advantage of the cooler weather today to increase containment on the 35,933-acre fire. The fire is 63 percent contained and is currently staffed by 299 personnel.
Due to heavy firefighter traffic along the Hat Point Road, the road remains closed. The route will be reopened as soon as safely possible, with the goal of opening in advance of bow season.
Today's suppression efforts included targeting areas of heat in drainages in the southern portion of the fire. Fire crews patrolled the western portion of the fire and used bucket drops on the two areas of heat as well as improved containment lines. Helicopters also used bucket drops to assist ground forces in securing the fireline in the Deep Creek area. The eastern portion of the fire was patrolled by air.
