August 21, 2014 Update
Contact Fire Information: 541-432-0119
Joseph, OR – The 299 personnel assigned to the Somers Fire continue to make progress and the fire is now 63 percent contained. The fire has been mapped at 35,958 acres.
Hat Point Road remains closed to the public due to heavy firefighter traffic and safety concerns with potential vehicle interactions. The route will be reopened as soon as possible, with the goal of opening for camp preparation and scouting before bow season.
Today's cooler weather with increased humidity is expected to aid firefighter efforts. Suppression efforts will include targeting hotspots and rehabilitating handline on the southern portion of the fire, improving containment line on the northern and western portions and monitoring the eastern portion by air.
Great Basin Incident Management Team 4 will transfer management of the Somers fire to the Northeast Oregon Interagency Type 3 team tomorrow. Resources remaining on the fire will include one Type 1 crew, one Type 2 initial attack crew, one Type 1 helicopter, one Type 2 helicopter and one Type 3 helicopter.
*Note: this is the last individual daily update for the Somers Fire due to limited fire activity and demobilization of resources.
