Joseph, OR – The 353 personnel assigned to the 35,917-acre Somers Fire made good progress today and it is now 58 percent contained.
Today the fire showed areas of heat in the southern and northwestern portions. To reduce the threat of spread potential, these areas were worked on both from firefighters on the ground and with helicopters using bucket drops.
Firefighters continued to build direct handline on the southern portion of the fire, to build and improve handline on the western and northern portions of the fire and to remove excess equipment on the eastern portion of the fire.
Recreationists in the area are reminded of the road closure at Hat Point Road and that no camping is allowed on the Oregon side of the Snake River. In addition, visitors should be cautious of heavy fire traffic in the area.
