Joseph, OR – Due to progress toward containment on the 35,917-acre Somers Fire, the closure to camping on the Oregon side of the Snake River has been lifted. Containment has been maintained at 58 percent by the 370 personnel assigned to the fire.
Due to heavy firefighter traffic along the Hat Point Road, the road remains closed. The route will be reopened as soon as safely possible.
Winds from the west gusting up to 25 mph are expected late this afternoon when temperatures are at the highest and humidity is at the lowest.
"The Deep Creek area, which is showing the most heat on the fire, will be mostly sheltered from the wind," said John Kidd Incident Commander.
Today's suppression efforts will include completing containment line on the southern portion of the fire. Fire crews will also focus on securing handlines around the Deep Creek area while helicopters deliver bucket drops to reduce heat and moderate fire behavior. Rehabilitation of fireline will begin on the western portion of the fire. The eastern portion of the fire will be patrolled by air and rehabilitation of fireline will be completed near the Pittsburg administrative site.
Somers Fire resources currently assigned include: five Type 1 crews, two Type 2 crews, seven engines, eight water tenders, one jet boat, three Type 1 helicopters, three Type 2 helicopters, four Type 3 helicopters and two air attack platforms.
To reduce travel time and increase time suppressing the fire, most firefighters are spiked out closer to the Somers Fire.
