9/4/2018 Klondike and Taylor Creek Fires Update

Fire Update - Tuesday. September 4, 2018 - 8:00 a.m.
Klondike Fire
Southern Area Red Team
Mike Dueitt, Incident Commander

Overview

Klondike Fire West Zone

  • A community meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 5 beginning at 5:00 P.M. at the Agness Community Library.
The areas with the most fire growth occurred at the confluence of the East and West Forks of Indigo Creek, along Silver Creek, and to the southwest into the Chetco Bar Fire burn area. Some growth occurred on the east perimeter northeast of Chinaman Hat Peak. Reduced visibility due to smoke prevented air tanker flights, so helicopter water and gel drops were used exclusively. Crews continued fuel reduction operations on contingency lines and worked on structure protection in and around Agness.

Conditions favorable for high fire activity will persist on Tuesday. Firefighters will continue reducing fuel availability, treating the contingency line on the ridge on the west side of Horse Sign Creek, and treating the ridge west of Fish Hook Creek. No tactical firing operations are planned for Tuesday but may be required if fire activity threatens control lines.

The evacuation level in the Agness Zone is 2 - Be Set.

Forest Road 3313 (Quosatana Creek Road) is under a temporary closure order

Klondike Fire East Zone and Taylor Creek Fire
Derrick Davenport will lead a Type 3 Incident Management Team assuming management of the Taylor Creek and Klondike East Zone Fires beginning Tuesday morning at 8:00 am. Monday was a “shadow” day between incoming and outgoing team members to ensure a smooth transition. Craig Glazier and his Type 2 Northwest Incident Management Team 12 will be returning home after nearly two weeks on the fires.

The new Incident Command Post will be at the Forest Service’s Wild Rivers Ranger Station in Cave Junction. The old camp at Lake Selmac has been almost completely disassembled, a load of plywood and dimension lumber from the temporary structures was donated to the Illinois Valley High School in Cave Junction for their wood shop. Additionally, three loads of excess packaged food from firefighters’ lunches were given to the Illinois Valley Family Coalition.

Team 12 would like to thank the people of the Illinois Valley for their gracious hospitality during our stay.
We hope that you will have a peaceful and smoke-free remainder of 2018.
