FIRE UPDATE SEPTEMBER 5, 2018

Klondike Fire
Southern Area Red Team
Mike Dueitt, Incident Commander

Overview
Klondike Fire West Zone

A community meeting will be held tonight, Wednesday, September 5 beginning at 5:00 P.M. at the Agness Community Library.

Fire activity increased Tuesday due to hotter and drier conditions. Extensive use of helicopter drops helped minimize fire growth. Heavy smoke in the Indigo Creek drainage again prevented air tanker operations over the fire. Torching pockets of manzanita in this area produced large smoke columns visible from Agness and Oak Flat.
Crews continued fuel reduction operations on contingency lines and worked on structure protection in and around Agness.
On Wednesday very hot and dry weather will continue. Upper level winds are forecast to shift from the northeast to west-southwest. A strategy similar to Tuesday is planned, including fuel reduction, contingency line treatment west of Horse Sign Creek and Fish Hook Creek and aggressive suppression of any increased fire activity on the fire perimeter. If weather conditions permit, firefighters will use ground ignition to remove ground fuels and secure the western edge of the fireline between Saddle Mountain and Game Lake Peak.

The evacuation level in the Agness Zone is 2 – Be Set

Klondike Fire East Zone and Taylor Creek Fire

A Type 3 incident management organization lead by Derrick Davenport took command of the fires yesterday at 8:00 A.M. A new Incident Command Post (ICP) has been established at the Forest Service’s Wild Rivers Ranger Station in Cave Junction. The ICP at Lake Selmac has been disassembled, and the NW Team 12 has returned home for some rest and relaxation.
Firefighters continue to patrol and monitor the fire perimeter which has been secured, however, interior islands of unburned fuels continue to smolder and will continue to generate smoke visible from the roadways. Suppression repair activities to prevent erosion, fix roads, and recover timber damaged during suppression efforts continue on both the Taylor Creek Fire and Klondike East.
