FIRE UPDATE SEPTEMBER 6, 2018

Klondike Fire
Southern Area Red Team
Mike Dueitt, Incident Commander

Overview

Klondike Fire West Zone

Hot, dry weather continued Wednesday, and active winds from the south and west pushed smoke north toward Agness. The west side of the fire was active east of Game Lake but helicopters worked the area in the morning before heavy smoke moved in. The northeast side experienced minimal growth including movement toward Fish Hook Peak.
Favorable weather conditions allowed for a successful tactical firing operation by Game Lake on the western side of the fire in the late afternoon. Other actions included continued improvement of fire line and preparation for firing operations on multiple areas of the fire. Approximately 90 people, including 45-50 local citizens, attended the public meeting in Agness.
On Thursday, the hot, dry weather will continue. Upper level winds are forecast to shift from southwest in the morning to west-southwest in the afternoon. Firing operations are planned on the western side between Game Lake Peak and Saddle Mountain and the Indigo Prairie area west of Fish Hook Peak. Depending on conditions, firing operations may be conducted on the 2308 road near Sugarloaf Mountain as well. Crews not involved with the firing operations will continue to improve lines and support firing operations if needed.

The evacuation level in the Agness Zone is 2 – Be Set

Firing operations are not expected to change the evacuation level for Agness.

Klondike Fire East Zone and Taylor Creek Fire
There are approximately 90 personnel working on the Taylor Creek Fire and Klondike Fire East patrolling the fire perimeter and performing suppression repair. Repair activities include grading heavily used roads, repairing damaged culverts, replacing vegetation and installing waterbars on dozer lines and hand lines to prevent erosion, and recovering timber damaged during suppression efforts. Though residents have been able to return to their homes, forest closures remain in place and will for some time. Links to more information on closures can be found below.
