8-4-14 1100 Snag Canyon FireKittitas County, WA -08/04/2014 - Evacuation levels and road closures remain the same today for the Snag Canyon Fire north of Ellensburg. There are approximately 79 homes in the Level 3 evacuation area and 100 homes in the Level 2 area, with many of those secondary homes.The fire is still estimated at 1,830 acres, with an updated size expected later today from the fire management team. Approximately 200 firefighters are on scene, with additional resources on order.
Personnel from the Kittitas County Emergency Operations Center are attempting to assess property damage today. Unofficially, 8-12 structures have been reported lost. An updated number is expected once damage assessments are completed.
Once residents are allowed back into the fire affected areas, anyone with property damage is encouraged to file a report with the EOC, either by calling 509-933-8305 or by filling out the damage form on the county website,http://www.co.kittitas.wa.us/. This information will be used in determining if damages are significant enough to warrant a request for federal disaster assistance and various other forms of assistance.
“We understand these are stressful times for residents and property owners. Our priorities are life, safety and protection of personal property and animals. Kittitas County Sheriff Gene Dana and the Incident Management Team appreciate everyone’s support and cooperation.”
A public meeting is planned for Tuesday, August 5th at 7:00pm at Central Washington University’s Student Union Recreation Center Theater, 400 E. University Way, Ellensburg. Representatives from the Kittitas County EOC and the Washington Incident Management Team #1 will be present to give a fire update and answer questions. Parking is free.
Anyone needing the Red Cross emergency shelter can contact the EOC. An emergency shelter for livestock and other animals remains open at the Kittitas County Fairgrounds. Currently there are 17 alpacas, two horses, two ponies and three dogs housed at the Fairgrounds. One additional dog is being sheltered at Ellensburg Animal Hospital.
