Cause: Lightning, July 14, 2014
Location: Boulder Creek drainage, northeast of Stehekin and west of Butte Creek, in the Stephen
Mather Wilderness
Jurisdiction: North Cascades National Park Complex, National Park Service
Size: 2116 acres
Command: N. Rockies Wildland Fire Management Team, John Thompson, Incident Commander
Strategy: Point protection and modified suppression
On Friday, the fire growth was estimated at 66 acres. Activity was again on the north end, west of the lower reaches of Rennie Creek, with movement towards Reynolds Peak. Fire activity consisted of short uphill runs in heavier fuels and some single and group tree torching. Crews completed a hose lay operation in the War Creek Pass area designed to provide additional suppression contingencies should the fire move in that direction.
Operations will remain the same today with crews continuing direct suppression activities by “hot spotting” with the assistance of helicopter bucket drops. Fire behavior is expected to be slightly more active today because of predicted clearing skies and warmer weather. Crews are monitoring the fire from multiple locations to ensure quick action will be taken in the unlikely event of any spotting east of the Park boundary.
Sunday, a “Type 3 Team” will assume responsibility for the fire as the Northern Rockies Wildland Fire Management Team has completed their fourteen day tour. John Thompson will remain as the Incident Commander to maintain continuity of leadership.
A public meeting is planned for Monday, August 4th at 6:00 pm at the Twisp Grange Hall which is located at 344 West 2nd Avenue in Twisp. Fire officials and National Park Service personnel will discuss the most current information on the Lone Mountain 1 fire activity and will present the Long Term Plan for the fire.
All services are available in Stehekin which has not been experiencing smoke from the Lone Mountain 1 fire. The North Cascades National Park Superintendent has closed the Boulder Creek Trail in the Stephen Mather Wilderness. Campfires are banned in all campgrounds from Purple Point to Tumwater. The Forest Supervisor of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has lifted the area closure in the vicinity of the Lone Mountain 1 Fire on National Forest Lands with the exception of War Creek and Williams Creek trails.
